SMS Giveaway Day!

>> Sunday, May 16, 2010

First, a shout-out to my regular readers and a welcome to newcomers via SMS' Giveaway Day (I encourage you to take a look around but I also know you've got all sorts of giveaways to enter. So welcome, and I hope you join the flock of regulars).

How does the above picture relate to Giveaway Day? Well, those are images of the last few quilts I've made, and I've been collecting the little scraps, the tiny ones too small to go into the scrap box, in a bag on my sewing table. Scraps that would be perfect for a ticker-tape quilt, as well as some strips that could be deployed in a string quilt, and a few larger squares and rectangles that could be used in almost any scrap quilt.

But that's not all.

The scrap bag will arrive with some stripes -- a fat quarter of pink Sugar Snap squiggly lines and a large-but-not-quite-FQ of some Michael Miller blue/yellow/brown stripes.

{For those who aren't sewers or who aren't loving this giveaway or who simply love all giveaways, I'll be doing another one in the next month of something I've made so my non-sewer readers out there can get something too.}

The fine print:
*Leave a comment below. Tell me something fun -- about yourself, that you'll do in May, that you're saving up to do, about where you live...
*Make sure you leave a way to reach you -- through your blogger contact info, an email address, etc.
*The giveaway is open until Thursday, May 20 at 8 pm EST.
*This is open to everyone, anywhere in the world.
*I'll probably select the winner randomly, but if someone tells me an amazing tale, bribes me with something amazing, or otherwise makes me laugh out loud, I won't guarantee I won't pick them (how's that for a sentence based on negatives!).

Good luck!

My interest in sewing and pretty fabric began when I made my own scrub caps for my surgery rotation. I almost wish I wanted to be a surgeon so that I could make myself a zillion scrub caps; there are so many pretty fabrics!

Ohh, nice fabric !! I'm sure it wants to come here to visit with me and be made into something gorgoeus.

I'm sitting here in front of the computer checking out blogs when I should be sewing, or lighting the fire, it's really cold and still foggy here today (at almost lunchtime).

I'm doing the giveaway too, so come over and visit!

Grace May 16, 2010 at 7:44 PM

I think I've been a reader of yours since the last giveaway day! Love your blog, love your work.

Something I'm saving up for.... plane tickets for our family to go to Sweden to visit our best friends. Haven't seen them in 2 yrs.

I love that squiggly fabric.

momhooten May 16, 2010 at 7:48 PM

I've been quilting for 30 years. I will be retiring the end of May and starting a new job--FULL TIME GRANDMA to my first granddaughter. I live in the panhandle of Texas where the wind blows more than Chicago. I'd love to win more fabric, since I'll have a lot more time to quilt!

Sam May 16, 2010 at 8:21 PM

I'm doing something fun -- packing for Alaska! I'll need a new stash when I get there, I'm leaving behind everything 15 or more years old.

Elsa May 16, 2010 at 8:43 PM

well, I started sewing when I was about 5 years old. I had a little doll that needed more clothes so my mom gave me some fabric, showed me how to thread a needle and said I could make her some clothes. Got everything cut out and started to sew! It was really cute till I realized that I had sewn it directly on to my own little dress! I cried a lot and my mom helped me cut it off and then fixed the little doll dress for me! It was the beginning of a love for sewing! I actually started making my own clothing when I was about 8 years old! if I make clothing now it's for friends ... love making bags, quilts, project bags, things like that ... love creating!
My email is ... elsa.hart@gmail.com
thanks for the opportunity and being so generous!

Something fun? I have twin daughters who are two years old. Most days that's pretty fun if I will stop and take a step back from the insane to-do list in my head and take the time to laugh and soak up their laughter.

Jen May 16, 2010 at 9:27 PM

(I'm a regular reader!) Anyway...what am I doing in May....MOVING! Getting packed out the last week in May, driving from Northern NV to Southern CA Memorial Weekend; hopefully get our stuff delivered on June 1st; unpacking before the 19th of June when my sister arrives for a 2 week visit (of which 5 days will be spent in Disneyland) BUSY...let me tell ya!

Oh and I LOVE scraps!

Jocelyn May 16, 2010 at 9:46 PM

Wow what a fun giveaway! The most amazing thing happening to me is I am retiring! Okay, I am not old enough to really retire, but this is the last year of teaching my last child, and I will be done, through, fini! Thanks for entering me :-)

Kat May 16, 2010 at 10:57 PM

I just graduated from college (undergrad) on Friday. That's probably the most exciting thing I'll do this May (unless I get a job. Fingers crossed!) Thanks!

lili May 17, 2010 at 5:52 AM

I'm 1/5 of the way into an epic queen size string quilt, so I'm very hungry for scraps!

I'm currently working on a new book (i'm an Aussie YA author) and thinking about doing a Phd next year!

Christine May 17, 2010 at 7:37 AM

I'm almost guiltily giddy with this May, as my last child in high school graduates, and I'm FREE to do what I want, without making sure that all are driven to where they need to go, safe in the house, FED with healthy food, well from all the chicken soup I made for them this winter.

My life is full...and my machine and fabrics beckon me.

I have a huge smile on my face.

Annelise Pedersen May 17, 2010 at 7:42 AM

Willa May 17, 2010 at 10:26 AM

Maybe I can haul out the sewing machine and make a dent in the stash.

Ali May 17, 2010 at 10:29 AM

Great giveaway! Thanks for the chance to win. I'm just getting into sewing and can think of so many great projects to use these scraps with. I'm so excited for Memorial Day weekend b/c not only do I get to spend it with my family, but it marks the beginning of my new life as a stay at home mom! :)

sembatgirl May 17, 2010 at 10:49 AM

Thanks for the giveaway! In May, I can't wait to go on vacation - Memorial Day camping!

Susie May 17, 2010 at 10:51 AM

Thanks for the great giveaway - so many creative uses for great scraps! May is always a busy month - mother's day, daughter's birthday (party was yesterday...my little pony toys have now taken over the house, ha!), our wedding anniversary (7 this year!), and then right around the corner my birthday too! my husband has a hard time keeping up with all the dates this time of the year :)

Jeni May 17, 2010 at 11:01 AM

what IS it about other people's scraps? great giveaway.

this has nothing to do with quilting but here's my story...

this morning one of my students turned in a worksheet (i'm a music teacher) and instead of writing "quarter note" for one of the answers, she drew a picture of a man's head in a circle. "well, um, it's a quarter," she said. "i just don't know how to spell it."

children are hilarious!

Justine May 17, 2010 at 11:05 AM

Ohh nice goodies in the giveway! Well something exciting for me in the very near future is a 3 week vacation to Florida where I'll be marrying the man of my dreams. Aww. Nice! Justine xx

Yay, scraps!

Something fun about me..hmm. Well we own five cats. We wanted two but they keep showing up. The last one litterally at our doorstep (Well between the doorstep and the front of the house crying pitifully. He was three weeks old and sounded like a bird. He still chirps rather than meows.

Sara May 17, 2010 at 11:30 AM

Have you been reading my mind??!! How did you know I have been dreaming of making of ticker tape quilt but dreading the gathering of my own wrinkled, random mess of mostly ugly scraps? In all seriousness, I was contemplating making this exact quilt for my friend who is pregnant with her first child and who's fiance (and father of the baby) just passed away last week. So sad. I can't think of a better welcome into the world then wrapped in a handmade quilt, right? Thanks for the chance at such a generous giveaway!

Katie B May 17, 2010 at 11:34 AM

Great giveaway! I actually have a pretty quiet May, but I'm hoping to find time to take my son to a minor league baseball game.

K. Pendleton May 17, 2010 at 12:07 PM

I have been wanting to try quilting for a while now, but have yet to finally get started. I love quilt-peeping. This would give me the inspiration to finally do my own!

verykerryberry May 17, 2010 at 12:09 PM

I'm entering only a few giveaways; I chose yours because of the intriguing name of your blog. When I clicked on the collage of your quilts, I thought "Here is a liberated quilter!" I love your work and your spirit that shows in your designs.
I do traditional applique, liberated patchwork (there is a friendly and interesting Yahoo group called Lib-Quilters) and mostly small or mini quilts. Your tidbits would be like a burst of light (and smiles) into my muted tone on tones that I've collected for a long time.
At 60 years old, I am ready for a burst of something! Following your blog will be one of those bursts. I've got many great years of quilting and so much more ahead of me; a piece of new fabric may become my symbol for new future experiences. Thanks very much,
Kathleen C.

Michelle May 17, 2010 at 3:46 PM

Isabel May 17, 2010 at 4:59 PM

Great fabric! I'd love to use some of that as lining for some book purses I've got lined up to do soon. Your blog name actually made me think of the ich-bin-ich (loosely translates to "i am myself", a tale about a small animal that goes on a quest to find out who it is, very endearing children's tale) and it'd be too cute to make a stuffed ich-bin-ich out of the fabrics.

So something funny... mhhh I'm a busy mom of two (one year and two year old.. you get the pic) a wife to a deployed soldier (ok that's not funny at all) a crazy dog owner and I serve a lazy cat.. And I love to sew.. and right now not much, but I'm trying.. I'm sometimes so busy that I mix activities.. which can end badly.. So the other day I was trying to serve everyone breakfast and also have my well derserved coffee.. and instead of milk I spooned catfood in my coffee mug..YUCK!! So I guess that was funny, was it??

Emily May 17, 2010 at 5:15 PM

Hm... well, this has NOTHING to do with sewing, but I'm currently riding a high because my husband has FINALLY finished his degree... he's been working on it on and off for the 10 years we have been together. I'm hoping to top off the graduation joy by getting lucky with a giveaway!

Jocelyn May 17, 2010 at 10:18 PM

I am getting together with my BFF this summer and we are planning on having some fun times together :-) Thanks for entering me. I always enjoy seeing your new creations.

Well, I don't have anything planned for May, but I think in July my husband and I are going to try for baby number 3.. and I'm hoping for a boy... I want my little baby Oscar!

I've actually been trying to find boy fabrics that I LOVE in the hopes of increasing my luck and chances of getting a boy... but I know it's still a 50/50 chance.

Tong May 17, 2010 at 11:24 PM

Hi there! Thanks so much for the giveaway, I love the prizes! I live in Toronto, Canada with my boyfriend. We bought our first (and probably our only) house together last year and became home owners at age 25. We are very proud of this accomplishment because we worked hard and lived in a tiny bachelor's apartment to save up for our dream house. It's gorgeous and spacious, quite a chance from living in a 400 square feet apartment to owning a 3200 square feet house!

mab May 17, 2010 at 11:27 PM

ooooh.... I've got a project that needs lots of tiny scraps!

I'm currently making my first queen-sized quilt. It's not a difficult pattern, but it's taking me for stinkin' ever. Why? Because I keep getting distracted with other projects!

Thanks for the chance to enter!

My mom visted from Canada this month and we shopped our way through several quilt stores. I broke down and bought fabric that i didnt want to go on the list of "fabrics that got away from me" (like Neptune). I bought Hushaby, Nicey jane and Love. No idea what to make with them but I cant wait.
Thank-you for the giveaway.

Yay scraps - I love the surprise treasures amongst them!

Here's an odd fact about myself: I can't sleep with the sheets tucked in, my feet MUST be able to breathe! I'm having a heck of a time at hotels, where every night the walk around the bed begins again - untucking all those sheets that were carefully tucked in by the room service :)

Well, I have been called up for consideration at jury duty. I am working hard on my attitude, for I was so anticipating lots of time to quilt and garden (with the end of homeschool co-op) and now I am afraid I will be spending massive amounts of time in a court room. I keep reminding myself that living in a free country with free elections means being responsible for civic duty as well. Maybe I will take along design paper and colored pencils!

Oh, something fun ... the most fun I have at the moment watching my 6 months old son trying to crawl. He has not quite mastered it yet ... so this looks really funny.
But if you want to see something really funny I would recommend the movie "The ugly truth". I just saw that one a couple days ago ... I love movies where you can laugh! :-)
Thanks for the giveaway!

I am typing with one finger because I have a baby in my lap and she is pulling my hair while trying to kick the keyboard with her adorable chubby bare feet. She should be sleeping. Despite all her antics I will likely make her a quilt with your fabric. Hopefully she won't need to sit on my knee while I sew too!

Thanks for a chance at your great giveaway!

Ariane May 18, 2010 at 5:57 PM

What a great giveaway! Hmmm...I'll be working on some of my sewing projects and making my flower beds prettier, in between working and running around after my kids. Not too interesting I guess. But that's what is going on.

Unknown May 18, 2010 at 6:09 PM

Hmm, my main thing for May is getting ready for my daughter's Bday this June. Our Bdays are 3 days apart. I'm first. The other day my daughter asked me why we never celebrate my birthday. I was touched that she noticed. She's 5!
This beautiful fabric would make an awesome quilt for my new niece. I'm soon to be a first time auntie and dying to spoil my sis and her baby!
Thanks for the awesome giveaway.

I'm always collecting nice tiny scraps for my pouches and purses, so even if I don't quilt them all into a bigger piece, I'd love to win!!

Something I'm looking forward: my second trip to the US, ten years after the first one.
Something fun about myself: I got married last March but our parents don't know (I'm not sure my mom will find it funny, even though I've been living with my husband for ten years).
Something curious about where I live: it's a city really close to Barcelona, Spain. So close so close that there's a street (you can look it up on google maps: it's called Riera Blanca) in which the buildings on one side belong to Barcelona and the buildings on the opposite sidewalk belong to L'Hospitalet, the city where I live.

There you go ;-)

Thanks for the chance to win!!

Oooh, love the pictures of your quilts!

May is my favourite month because for me it means getting pampered on mother's day at the start of May and again on my birthday at the end of May.
Although all the pampering has been put on hold this year due to my youngest suffering a serious flare up of her asthma and requiring lots of trips to the doctor and hospital.
At least I'm having fun finding lots of new blogs through the SMS giveaway day!

What great prizes!

This May we are taking our 9 month old daughter Robyn away on holiday for the first time. We're going to a holiday park with my parents and my sister and BIL. I'm so excited! Our daughter is absolutely wonderful but such hard work- I thought I worked hard as a primary school teacher before she arrived, but dealing with 30 7 year olds everyday is nothing compared to a baby! So I'm looking forward to putting my feet up and letting Nanna and Grandad look after Robyn.

Unfortunately, May is a busy month for me at work. My son has baseball practice 3 times a week and games twice a week. And I have been trying to finish 4 baby quilts in the last month as we have babies galore right now. I am actually looking forward to June for a little respite.

Anyway, thanks for the giveaway, I love me some scraps.
